I Broke Alex Jeffreys Golden Rule
gig but missing my wife's paycheck for 2 months, especially around Christmas, made things a little tight financially.
Back to Thursday night. Keep in mind I have been obsessed with winning this contest. I spent the whole weekend using Web 2.0 sites and commenting on blogs to build backlinks and got my listing from 26 up to 14. I was on a roll. So far during the work week I have not been able to do squat towards winning the contest and this is frustrating the hell Best online prescription out of me.
I get home from work and take a shower. The wife has to run some errands so I cook dinner for me and the kids. After dinner, the kids are watching TV and playing in the living room so I go upstairs to my office (an oversized walk in closet) and get ready to "go on the attack". Since I have started with "daily did sheets" and what not, when I fire up the computer, it's "game on".
About 20 minutes into it, I here a commotion downstairs. OK, I always here a commotion downstairs but this one had a different tone to it that made me jump up and run downstairs. My 3 year old daughter was messing with Snoopy, our beagle, while he was eating (she tortures that poor dog) and he bit her on the lip. It only took a glance to see that she was going to need sutures.
My wife was still out with the car so I gave her a ring and she hurried home and we went to the emergency room. I still haven't figured out why they call it an emergency room, because the few times that I have had the pleasure of visiting such a place, I always ended up waiting for hours. I was not dissappointed this time either. We arrived at about 7:30 PM and left about 12:30 AM. The end result was 3 sutures and a prescription for anti-biotics.
Now I am normally very calm and collected in situations like this where my wife tends to be a little on the panicy side. (Is panicy a word?) After we had been waiting for about 2 hours, she noticed that I was really agitated. More so than normal. She kept asking me what was wrong. When I finally calmed down enough to think on it, I realized what the problem was.
I was ticked off because I felt I was wasting my time, when I should have been at home working on my computer. It wasn't because I was all upset about my daughter getting hurt, I was stressing about that contest and winning that $1000.
That is f****d up! But it's the truth. I'm not going to try and sugar coat it. I had become obsessed with winning that stupid contest. But here is the irony of the whole matter. My Google listing actually slipped back to the 3rd page! I looked at the date of my last blog post and I had not made a post in 6 days. I didn't respond to any of my comments either.
Because I was chasing the money, I neglected the basics and it caused my listing to slip back in the SERPS. The search engines like quality content that is FRESH. I would have been much better off if I had just made a good, relevant blog post every day. Even if I had made a blog post every other day, I would have helped my cause more than I did. I deviated from my master plan and I paid the price.
Don't get caught up chasing the money. Make your 90 day plan and break it down to monthly and weekly plans. Then execute those plans and don't let anything distract you. I just checked Google and I am about to slip back onto the 4th page. I am currently at number 29. I am going to quit worrying about the contest and get back on track with my original plan.
The first thing I am going to do is make sure I make a post at least every other day. Today I am going to do the videos on how to set up a PLR product to use with a JV Giveaway event. I said I was going to do this last week and I have had people asking about it. Shame on me for letting those people down. The video will be up today.
I am also putting together an ebook about JV Giveaways that I will be giving away. Hopefully, I can finish that up this weekend. I also have a couple of killer ideas for the video contest that I am going to be working on. I am also going to continue working on my review page for Alex Jeffreys coaching program that I have started to continue to add value and content to this blog.
Building an online business while enjoying the finer things in life: family, friends, golf, guitar, fishing, nature, and a good game of chess.

Hi JT
Hope your daughter is well and back on her feet again!
I know the feeling of getting distracted all the time and never feel that you get the work done that was set for the day.
I'm not that established with kids and stuff. I live alone and that way I can probably get more stuff done. But I'm still having a hard time not getting distracted by my friends that constantly drag me out for beers and party.
Family comes first every time. And I think you are doing a great job with the limited time you have on working with your online biz.
I to work 40 hours a week on another job, then I have 1 other online project that is some what successful and earning me money and the rest of the time I use to figure out this new marketing stuff that Alex is teaching.
Information overload sometimes right?
Keep up the good work JT.
Talk to you soon.

Hey JT,
Don't beat yourself up over it. As long as your daughter is OK that's all that matters.
As far as why do they call it an emergency room. Well I've been asking myself that question for years. Apparantly it's not just my hospital that sucks.
We have something in common other that being students of Alex Jeffreys. I was an electronics technician for 35 years until I had to go out on disability. I used to trouble shoot commercial fire alarm, security, card access, communications and video equipment, and in the end I worked mostly building and maintaining computers.
Don't give up on trying to rank for Alex Jeffreys. I just checked and you are on the third page at number 22. With a little more effort you can get there.
Later,
Jeff Sargent
Thanks for another great post, JT. You always offer a lot of great value.
All the best,
Joan Hughes
Hi JT,
Yep, stuff happens, and yes we do tend to get off focus sometimes. The key is to be able to realize it as soon as possible. It's when we are off track for long perioeds that we really slow our movement forward.
And another key you pointed out is learning from your experience. So, make adjustments and proceed.
One more thing,
Can you change the url link you have for me in your blogroll? You have my personal development blog listed -somehow this got passed around.
My IM blog is http://makeinternetmarketingmoney.com
Plus if you visit my blog you can request to get listed in the custom search engine I have set up there.
Thanks, John
Hi JT,
Don't beat yourself up. As long as your daughter is well and happy, anything else is secondary.Take my words for it. We are doing this for our family. We want to quit our full time job and do this online thing full time. So, family comes first.
I know the feeling of frustration when things not working out. I have been obsessed with building my online business and it can be very destructive if you can't control your state of mind. I did mention in one of my post.
I am in my 5th month learning online business and been following you quite a while.I am not an SEO expert so I can't give you concrete advice on any other way of winning the competition.
Anyway, something to cheer you up. I saw your video on youtube (how to put video on your blog) decided to embed into my blog post. I mention you in my latest blog post and refer my readers to check out your blog. I hope you don't mind.
Do check out my blog post and hope you like what you see?
Keep in touch often.

Hey JT
Don't worry about it man – I've been finding my mind wandering away from where my focus should be at times. I just have to remind myself that I can put some time aside and accomplish so much by being organised – like how Alex sets his timer for 1 hour and then allows nobody to disturb him. Keep doing your 'daily did' sheets and your business will build up naturally.
I've been following your blog for a little while now – I'm a fellow Alex Jeffreys student. I can tell you know a thing or 2 about SEO, have you written an ebook about it? I always feel like there are gaps in my SEO knowledge. Like when I bookmark your homepage or a post on your site, it always has: "| Alex Jeffreys Coaching Program" on it, I wonder how you edit that? And then theres all those social bookmarking sites and other ways to get links. It can be confusing at times
Anyway, just wanted to let you know that you're doing a good job and I look forward to reading more from you.
-Ed
Hi JT,
I might have to stand in the corner for a while as punishment for not coming here sooner. You are one of my favorite students/bloggers and I've been keeping up with you on by your comments. And of couse, what other people say about you to.
But today, I have a new toy from http://Joe Trueman.com . That's how I got here. Joe put together a file of at least 140 students that works with feed demon. Today I actually set it up and when it was finished it told me there was a ton of stuff to read.
Feed Demon then asked if I wanted to HIT the PANIC button and I said yes. Then it proceeded to mark as read all posts that were more than 48 hours old. That totaled 1,190.
But then I was able to look at each of the students Joe had in the file and see the posts in an organized manner. So there you were. And here I am.
I'm glad your daughter is alright. I must thank you for the story because I find myself in that situation too with my 2 youngest boys. My 8 year old has been waiting patiently for me to make a video with him using the stop motion software and his Legos. I have been putting it off because I feel like I have to keep up with the super studs out there.
I'm glad you mentioned the basics of posting because I don't know anything about SEO. Getting to the #1 rank for me is just a ridiculous idea (for now). Just how many things do you need know to learn to make IM work?
Do you know what really interests me is your plan. I have been working on my to do(s)and using my planner, but it's not effective yet. I'm looking to see if someone might share a copy of what a weeks schedule looks like.
How to you stay in control of the things that must be done? What is the order of priority? How much time do you dedicate to specific tasks? I'm sure I'm not using my time as wisely as possible. Feel free to email me.
I am looking forward to my future visits here. Thanks to my new toy.
Talk to you soon,

I'm so sorry for what you experienced. I can feel your feeling because we have almost similar background. I'm actually running a real estate project and now developing my website http://www.bestsurabayaproperty.com in order to utilize my marketing effort. Fortunately I have enough spare time to spend. And I don't have many trouble with my family. I like to attend motivation seminar either. I think we have the same dream of being freedom through internet marketing. By the way, my website has come to page 1 until 4 in Google and Yahoo with more than 500 keywords. So go on, never give up.
Hi JT,
I'm literally just about to go out but thought you'd be interested in my latest post. It extensively mentions you and a topic close to your heart – SEO !!
Love to hear what you think about it. Be warned it's a lengthy one

I feel for you! Two small kids here – both of whom think 3am is a GREAT time to get up, so finding time to work my business can be a challenge! But just keep plugging at it – a little every day makes a huge difference.
JT,
Fantastic post mate. (Over in Oz we call everyone mate, so don't worry.)LOL!
You are very knowledgeable and I should come here and "drink from your well" far more often. It is just a time thing ATM.
You know something JT? When the mad rush to get these sites functioning the way we all want is over then there will be plenty of time to do everything.
I sincerely hope your little girl is OK and that she has now learned a valuable lesson with a dog that wasn't a bloody big Doberman or a German Shepherd or an Akita or something really dangerous. For that you (and she) can be thankful. So, there is always as positive even though it was a nasty event. I hope it all turns out OK.
Best wishes,
Gary Simpson
If you haven't already voted for Alex Jeffreys in my poll then please do so. Incredibly (I can't believe this!) 10% of the people have voted that they HATE Alex Jeffreys!

Hey JT,
That is so scary when your child (or mate) is hurt or ill and a trip to the ER is needed. Glad she's okay now and you're able to focus again.
I know how it is, we had our own trip to the ER last week. It really puts attention back on what really matters; your loved ones. It's why we're doing this in the first place, right?
I'll be watching the video because I'm still struggling with the giveaway stuff and how to do that.
Thanks always for the great quality blog.
Theresa
Hi J.T.,
I haven't exactly been breaking Alex's golden rule (I didn't expect to get much traffic for the contest, especially because of my holiday schedule). But I can relate to the hospital trip with a 3 year old, I had one of those myself – a bead up his nose! And like you, it also seems that everything that can happen to keep me from getting online happens. I feel bad that I didn't enjoy the holidays as much as I should have because all I was thinking about was everything I wanted to get done online. It's getting better now though!
You have so much helpful information here, I visit almost every day!
Talk to you soon,
Lori
I hope your daughter is doing much better. It's always too bad when it takes a big smack in the face to wake us up, but atleast you felt the smack. Sometimes it can take even longer to wake up to how one-tracked we've become.
Looking forward to watching your video's.
