Alex Jeffreys SEO Competition Is Heating Up

sort of control. You have to be scientific and systematic. Only change one variable at a time and then monitor the results.

SEO is a long term strategy. There are ways to create quick SEO results but they are Black Hat methods and Google will eventually catch up to you and possibly ban your IP address and domain forever. You can also report any suspicious activity directly to Google if you suspect that someone is using Black Hat methods.

Black Hat includes things like:

  • hidden text or links
  • misleading or repeated words
  • deceptive redirects
  • doorway pages
  • cloaked pages
  • duplicate sites or pages

Google considers all of these as spam and if you get caught, and you will, they will ban your domain and all your hard work is for naught.

The best SEO strategy is to provide valuable, fresh, and relevant content. You can optimize your site but don't over do it or it will look spammy. Make sure your navigation is "spider friendly". There are things you can do to help on page and off page. I have talked a little about on page today and will make another post with some off page tips tomorrow.

Hi JT,

That's a fantastic post and it is clear you have a great understanding of SEO particularly those services that are important as pingler which I had never heard of before. I tend to use pingomatic.com and assume they do the same but maybe ping different services/sites.

Steady as she goes with changes to your website I think is a great piece of advice. I have been caught out before and only found out later on that some change I had made to my website had a different change than I what I had intended. Always worth checking as they say.

Thanks
Steve Harold

Hi JT,

Just before I start, I know it wasn't black hat stuff I did (FAR from it) but I have removed that direct URL link to a certain page at my site.

I think that is a marvellous dissertation of CORRECT techniques to get EARNED rank in Google. For the life of me I simply cannot understand, or condone, any of the other "techniques." It's a cheats way of manipulating the results through falseness.

The crazy thing is, as you say – Google are SAVAGE on it and they have every right to be. If people are using hidden links and banners and all manner of deception to rank highly then WHO are they really fooling?

I liken it to playing a game of solitaire and when your half-ass attempt fails then you cheat and stand up and tell everyone – "Hey! Look! I got it out! I am SO good." It's crap. It's just a smokescreen.

Anyway JT, I just wanted to say that you are doing a fine job here educating people on these matters.

Also, can you email me please? There is a certain pic that I would like you to "alter" – especially the wording of that pic. My gravatar is a GOOD one to use! ;-) PLUS there are 2 other things that I need to talk to you about urgently.

Regards

Gary

HiJT
There is no big secret method I am using. Even though I have done some optimisation on my blog (with an seo plugin) and used headings and sub-headings with keywords, these are techniques you and others know are "bread and butter" to any SEO expert.
I have also used amongst other sites my Squidoo and Hubpages websites and written a couple of articles too for link building.
I haven't used text permalinks despite an attempt at this which caused my blog to not function properly. I know there is something I need to do with the .htaccess file that I have to change but I can't get my brain around it yet.
I am also aware that dramatic changes can make my blog sink too.
Best wishes
Steve Harold

Hi JT,

Your blog gets better and better each time I visit it – it is SO tidy, full of info and well thought out!

May I ask you for some help, please?
Tim Buttles has designed a really great cover for my ebook (the one that will be published just as soon as enough of the AJ students have posted a summary of their blog on my website). I have designed a popup to promote the book using getresponse. But now I have absolutely no idea where to post the the code in my blog. Does it need a plugin? All help and advice greatly appreciated.

Best wishes, Bev
