People like Jit Uppal, Dean Holland, and Adam Spiel (just to name a few) have done really well for them selves. It's taking me longer because I have limited time to dedicate to my online biz but this is going to be the year I break out. I will be launching a product before the end of the summer and should double my list in the process. That should be enough to put me in a position to walk away from my job. The SEO skills I have the team at Portal Feeder to thank. I was a member several years ago for about 6 months and learned a lot of great stuff. I have also invested a lot of time and money studying the subject. I have actually taken on an "offline" client who wants me to get his companies website on the first page of Google. I am making great head way and looks like I may have quite a few more customers lined up. I see your into the giveaways. They are a great way to start building your list but once you have several hundred subscribers make sure you start looking for adswap partners. Your list will really take off then.
