SEO

SEO, or search engine optimization, is all about getting your website ranked in the search engines. Obviously, being on the first page of Google is going to bring you the lion's share of traffic for the keywords you rank for. Yahoo and Bing, who are talking about joining forces, have a small share of the market so I will mostly be talking about Google.

I have become quite proficient with SEO strategies over the last 5 years. When I first started doing internet marketing, I tried to build an adsense empire. Therefore, I spent a lot of time, effort, and money learning how to get my websites to rank high in the search engines.

The "empire" got leveled about the time it became profitable and to this day I can not get an adsense account. I never did find out why Google banned my account and wasn't doing any "black hat" stuff. All they would say was I violated the terms of service. But that's a story for another time. (don't get me started)

My goal for 2011 is to impart my knowledge to all the beginners who are aspiring to become profitable online marketers. Internet marketing can be fairly simple, but it's not always easy. The best thing you can do is arm yourself with the right knowledge and focus on the things that will get you results.

I know that you may have seen programs claiming that you can make money without a website but the truth of the matter is that if you are going to build a "real" online business, then you are going to need some virtual real estate. List building is paramount which means at a bare minimum, you are going to need a squeeze page.

You can find out more about that on my IM Basics page. The reason I mention it here is because if you have a website, you want it to be SEO friendly. Every thing you find here will be about that. Make sure you check back regularly because I will be adding content all through the year.

elzie,

Do not be so hard on yourself. The theory of SEO is actually quite simple. Putting it into play is another. Once you educate yourself on the several methods behind good SEO, that is where you will concentrate your efforts. First and foremost, you will need to learn a bit about HTML. I am not asking you to be a programmer. Just learn the basics. Start by getting a grip on meta tags. Meta Tags are the heart beat of your web site. No meta tags..no index by search engines. This will take a week orso depending on how much time you devote. That is your start point. Basically SEO is a term we use to get traffic by organic searches by people who use search engines. If you have the right product niche and a solid web site with properly constructed Meta Tags and relative content, the crawlers will love you.

Internet marketing is no different than traditional marketing. We just use different tools. Start a binder with tabs. Keep good solid notes. Write your notes in a text editor not a word processor. A good text editor is "note pad" or "notepad ++". As a programmer I use Ultra Edit and Ultra Compare. Print your notes so you can take them with you where ever you go. You will learn by repetition.
